The concept of yield management was first introduced by the airline industry. Yield is the revenue generated per statistical unit. Very soon, the airline operators realized that their product was highly perishable, as a seat left unoccupied in flight results in a loss of revenue for that seat forever.

But when the supply exceeded demand, the airlines offered different discounts and package plans. This way of maximizing revenue generation is termed yield management.

Thus, Yield management and Revenue management are the processes of understanding, anticipating, and influencing consumer behavior in order to maximize revenue.
